How to style my natural curly hair?

December 24th, 2009 No comments

my hair is naturally curly, however the curls are big and lose. Gels weigh my hair down too much for the curls to stay. it makes me mad because i think my hair would be beautiful if i could get the curls to hold. So how do i make my natural curls stay without having a bunch of frizz?

Have you tried using a curl cream or a leave-in conditioner? Also you might have tried a gel with too strong a hold. Look for liquidy gels that wont weight your hair down (a good one is Herbal Essences Totally Twisted).

Here are some basic tips for curly hair that you might find helpful:
*Try to find a stylist who knows how to work with curly hair. You can find ratings here: http://www.naturallycurly.com/curlsalons
*Don’t shampoo every day.
*Comb conditioner through hair in the shower.
*Never use a brush, only a comb, or better yet fingers, when wet.
*Apply styling products to dripping wet hair
*Use styling products suited for your hair type. Don’t know yours? http://www.naturallycurly.com/hair-types

*Avoid terrycloth towels; use microfiber or tshirts instead.
*Air dry or use a diffuser with your blowdryer.
*Don’t touch your hair while it’s drying.

For specific products for your hair type you might want to explore the forums at:

There you can find others with the same hair type and try out some of their favorite products. So that’s really useful.

Lastly, it has made my hair so much better since I started the curly girl method! I used to almost never wear it down (it was a frizz/poof ball), but now I have pretty, shiny curls. ~:) It’s pretty radical—no sulfates (shampoo) or silicones—but it’s so great for curly hair. Give it a shot and check it out:

What are some cute but easy hairstlyes for teenage girls with nappy hair?

December 21st, 2009 No comments

please help! i dont kno how to cornrow or part my hair! its so nappy right now. Also if u have some good ways to get rid of acne without buying any products that would be nice too!

Well first you should set about detangling it. You can search on YouTube for detangling natural hair if you want some tips. Lots of helpful sistas make videos!

Also, the Black Hair Media forum is huge, so there are plenty of tips and threads that can help.

Even better, is the Nappturality forums!
Here is their hair style section.

This isn’t necessarily quick, but it’s cute and not that difficult. Just get a pack of weave and some patience, and you can make some kinky twists.

Good luck. And don’t worry parting isn’t that bad. You just need a little practice. It’s much easier with a rat tail comb on hair that is already detangled. And it helps overall if it’s damp and well-conditioned.
